Signal is a nonprofit, open-source messaging platform from the Signal Foundation that provides end-to-end encrypted text, voice, video, and group communication across mobile and desktop. It emphasizes strong privacy and minimal metadata, offering features like disappearing messages, screen security, registration lock, and the Signal Protocol for cryptographic protection. Funded by grants and donations rather than ads or tracking, Signal is widely used by individuals, journalists, and organizations who need confidential communications. Developers can review and extend its open-source code and documentation to integrate or audit its technology.
