About this role

The Category Buyer – Steel Commodities at Caterpillar Inc. develops and executes strategic sourcing plans for steel-based components, specifically Ground Engaging Tools. This role partners with Engineering and Supplier Development to drive technical sourcing decisions, improve supplier performance, and manage long-term category strategy while balancing cost, quality, and supply continuity.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute category strategies for steel commodities aligned to enterprise goals
Partner with Engineering to ensure technical feasibility and design-for-cost outcomes
Evaluate supplier capabilities including metallurgy, fabrication processes, and quality systems
Lead negotiations with suppliers balancing market dynamics and raw material pricing
Manage supplier risk including capacity constraints and supply continuity challenges

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, or related fieldBackground as Supplier Development Engineer or Manufacturing EngineerExperience in heavy manufacturing or metals-based industriesKnowledge of steel, fabrication, casting, or machining processesFamiliarity with APQP or PPAP quality frameworks
