The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1945 and headquartered in New York City that provides a global forum for its 193 member states to cooperate on peace, security, development and human rights. Through its principal bodies and specialized agencies (for example WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, UNESCO and UNHCR) it coordinates peacekeeping and conflict prevention, delivers humanitarian assistance, promotes international law and human rights, and supports health, education and development programs. The UN also sets global norms, negotiates treaties, mobilizes financing and technical support, and leads efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and address climate change, poverty and inequality.
