The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a federal cabinet-level agency tasked—“with honor and integrity”—to safeguard the American people, the homeland, and national values by preventing terrorism, securing borders, and managing major incidents. DHS oversees a range of components and programs (including FEMA, TSA, Customs and Border Protection, immigration services, and cybersecurity initiatives) to protect transportation, critical infrastructure, and the nation’s digital and physical security. It sets policy, issues guidance and resources, coordinates emergency response with state and local partners, and enforces laws and programs to reduce threats and enhance national resilience.
