The Indian Health Service (IHS) is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services charged with providing and advocating for health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. As the principal federal health care provider to these populations, IHS operates and supports hospitals, clinics, public‑health programs, and community services across tribal and urban settings, offering primary care, behavioral health, dental, specialty care, and prevention initiatives. Its programs flow from the government‑to‑government relationship with federally recognized Tribes and include disease‑prevention, chronic‑care, and tribal capacity‑building efforts.
