Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) is an evidence‑based education approach that improves foundational literacy and numeracy by first assessing children’s actual learning levels and then teaching them in small, level-homogeneous groups. It emphasizes active, activity‑based instruction delivered in short, focused cycles by teachers or trained volunteers, with regular reassessment to track progress. Originating from Pratham/ASER work in India and scaled internationally, TaRL has been adopted by governments and NGOs and has produced large learning gains in multiple evaluations. The initiative provides training, materials, implementation support, and monitoring tools to help education systems accelerate basic learning outcomes.
