The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is a U.S. membership-based civil rights organization that advocates for the equal access, rights, and quality of life of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Founded in 1880 and headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, NAD leads national policy and advocacy on issues including accessibility, education, employment, telecommunications, interpreting, captioning, and voting rights. The organization provides legal representation, policy development, public education, technical resources, and grassroots organizing to promote American Sign Language and remove barriers to communication and participation. NAD partners with individuals, communities, government agencies, and businesses to shape laws, standards, and practices that protect and expand civil rights for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
