CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) is one of the world’s largest centres for fundamental physics, operating major accelerator complexes — most famously the Large Hadron Collider — to study the basic constituents of matter and the forces that shape the Universe. It designs, builds and runs particle accelerators and detectors, analyses vast data sets, and produces landmark scientific results (for example the discovery of the Higgs boson). CERN also drives technology and knowledge transfer, having spawned innovations such as the World Wide Web, large-scale computing infrastructures, and advanced detector and accelerator technologies used by industry and research worldwide. Headquartered near Geneva and funded by its member states, CERN hosts thousands of international scientists, engineers and students and provides training, outreach and open scientific infrastructure.
