Committee for Public Counsel Services
The Committee for Public Counsel Services is seeking a full-time Trial Attorney to zealously defend clients in involuntary civil commitment proceedings, including trials and a limited number of appellate cases, for its Northampton office. This role involves representing indigent persons facing commitment to psychiatric facilities, guardianship petitions, and involuntary treatment orders throughout Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties. The position requires travel across the Commonwealth and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a community-oriented defense framework.
The Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) is Massachusetts’ state public defender agency that provides legal representation to low‑income people in criminal, juvenile, civil commitment, and appellate matters. CPCS supports a statewide network of public defenders and private panel attorneys and provides training, litigation support, and specialty units (such as youth and mental‑health defense) to ensure effective, constitutionally compliant representation. Through oversight, policy advocacy, and community partnerships, CPCS works to expand access to justice and improve the quality of indigent defense across the Commonwealth.
