The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a private, not‑for‑profit organization that administers the centralized matching process which places medical students and graduates into U.S. residency and fellowship positions using a mathematical algorithm. NRMP runs the Main Residency Match, the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP), and related services, providing registration, rules, timelines, and tools for both applicants and training programs. The algorithm it employs — research on which contributed to the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences — is designed to produce stable, fair matches, and NRMP also publishes data, guidance, and policy resources to support the medical education community.
