GGR-Peat
The role involves developing and applying nonlinear dynamical systems and statistical methods to create early warning systems for climate tipping points. The scientist will calibrate models against observations, evaluate Earth System Models, and collaborate with academic and governmental partners on high‑impact climate research.
GGR-Peat is a UKRI-funded demonstrator project focused on restoring degraded UK peatlands to function as effective long-term greenhouse gas removal (GGR) systems through accelerated peat formation. The project develops and tests innovative land-management practices — including high water level management, Sphagnum re-establishment, and biochar application — to convert peatlands from major GHG emission sources into carbon sinks. It also quantifies environmental, social, and economic benefits, and develops pathways for scaling sustainable peatland restoration across the UK.
