GGR-Peat
UKCEH is seeking two experienced Software Engineers to join the Digital Engineering Group at its Lancaster location, designing and developing cloud-based platforms for environmental science research. The role involves building and operating critical national research infrastructure, including data lakes and digital twins, while applying cloud-native principles to ensure system reliability and scalability. This position requires collaboration with researchers and technical specialists to create digital tools that drive scientific discovery and inform environmental policy.
GGR-Peat is a UKRI-funded demonstrator project focused on restoring degraded UK peatlands to function as effective long-term greenhouse gas removal (GGR) systems through accelerated peat formation. The project develops and tests innovative land-management practices — including high water level management, Sphagnum re-establishment, and biochar application — to convert peatlands from major GHG emission sources into carbon sinks. It also quantifies environmental, social, and economic benefits, and develops pathways for scaling sustainable peatland restoration across the UK.
